Adaptive Reuse Projects are becoming more and more prevalent in the condense markets we serve today. EWI is uniquely qualified to help our clients navigate the challenges, and the opportunities, that adaptive reuse projects present.

What is Adaptive Reuse?

Adaptive Reuse construction is taking an old, often derelict building and bringing it back to life in a new context.

For example, our project Hotel Haya, was once a gambling den and restaurant then spent decades night clubs. Today it is a boutique hotel, restaurant, café and event space.

The Ellison Difference

Adaptive Reuse projects require the award-winning attention to detail that Ellison Construction is known for. But, it is also essential to have a collaborative approach to building and design. Working on historical buildings is kind of like an archeological dig. As we carefully pull back the existing layers, we often find things we believe are worth saving. Unfortunately, these discoveries cannot be uncovered until we're actively working on the site, so they require everyone on the project team to pivot.

Examples of such discoveries can be found below. Many of these elements could have been removed or covered up but are now a beautiful homage to the buildings' underlying character and history.

Repurposed & Refreshed

  • Original Walls

    The Walls instead the original structure were exposed and refreshed, revealing their beauty and history instead of covering them with fresh paint.

  • Salvaged Wood

    Wood Salvaged from the existing buildings at Oxford Exchange is used throughout the project, as seen here, in the roof of their upstairs offices.

  • The Greenhouse

    A turn of the century greenhouse was moved from the back of the Stovall House Property to the front - a feat accomplished by carefully lifting the entire structure and slowly moving it to its new location.
